Underwriter Responsibilities
The Underwriter reports directly to the Underwriting Team Lead, up to the Underwriting Manager
Each Underwriter will be assigned to a team.
This position will ensure quality production on a daily basis, meeting production directives set by Underwriting Management.
The Responsibilities of the Underwriter include the following:
- Review all mortgage applications and supporting documents to ensure all necessary information is included in the loan file for approval per agency and investor requirements
- Assess risk and credit worthiness of applications, including applicant's employment, credit and financial history, submitted for underwriting approval
- Must be able to interpret underwriting guideline and apply the guidance accurately
- Issue decision with clear communication of additional documentation and information required to achieve final underwriting approval
- Collaborate with loan processor to ensure the goals of the customer are met and the loan file progresses efficiently through the process
- Provide updates and clarification on outstanding conditions and deficiencies identified on loans
- Assist origination and processing team with problem solving and solutions on a loan level-basis, when able
- Communicate and document reasons for approval or rejection of loans so clients and loan officers are well-informed of decisions
- Ensure once all information is gathered that it is accurate, compliance standards are met, and it is in congruence with company policies
- Collaborate with all departments, such as Processing, Funding, Quality Control, Post-Closing, to ensure organizational objectives are met
Specific duties to include:
- Ø Ensure UW SLAs are maintained each day
- Ø Respond to UW escalations per policy and procedure
- Ø Ensure quality metrics are maintained
- Ø Assist with post- underwriting issues & questions in a timely manner
- Ø Provide service and support to all departments to progress loan files in a timely manner, achieving the goal of closing by the estimate closing date
- Ø Attend training and ensure sound understanding of all agency and investor products and guidelines
NOTE: The Underwriter is responsible for maintaining knowledge of all mortgage underwriting guidelines and updates
- Ø Attend underwriting meetings held by the Underwriting Manager and Underwriting Team Lead
NOTE: Meetings are mandatory. Absence must be prior approved by Underwriting Management.
Qualifications for this role:
The Underwriter will maintain the highest level of integrity and confidence, adopting and promoting Rapid Mortgage policies and culture.
- § 3+ years' mortgage underwriting experience
- § 1+ years' experience using Encompass LOS
- § Prior experience with DU and LP (GUS preferred)
- § Previous experience using Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Selling Guides and investor overlays
- § Experience with Jumbo Underwriting preferred
- § Sound experience and knowledge of income calculations, including self-employed income
- § Prior experience working in a remote environment
- § Prior experience with pipeline/ production goals and achievements
- § Strong interpersonal communication
- § Ability to multitask and prioritize work based on business needs
- § Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and adjust daily priorities as needed
- § Analytical/critical thinking, able to anticipate problems and resolve quickly
- § Complete familiarity with FNMA, FHLMC, and USDA guidelines and understanding of all facets involved in real estate transactions.
- § Working knowledge of FNMA, FHLMC guidelines

Qualification for FHA DE or VA SAR Underwriter
- § 3+ years' mortgage underwriting experience
- § 1+ years' experience using Encompass LOS
- § FHA DE / VA SAR / USDA experience and working knowledge of government products required
- § Must have active DE and /or SAR and used within the most recent 12 months
- § Manual government underwriting experience preferred
- § Prior experience with DU and LP, FHA Total Score Card, GUS
- § Previous experience using Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Selling Guides as well as FHA HUD Handbook 4000.1, VA Lender Handbook, USDA Guaranteed Handbook 3555 and investor overlays
- § Sound experience and knowledge of income calculations, including self-employed income
- § Prior experience working in a remote environment
- § Prior experience with pipeline/ production goals and achievements
- § Strong interpersonal communication
- § Ability to multitask and prioritize work based on business needs
