RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Sticks to the laboratory' s practices for specimen handling and processing test analysis, reporting, and handling records of patient test results.
• Completes testing in all areas including hematology, chemistry, serology, blood bank, coagulation, microbiology, and urinalysis using traditional techniques and equipment. Also performs review of previous day' s findings, makes proper corrections and adds to appropriate quality assurance plan.
• Contributes appropriately in proficiency testing. Keeps records that prove that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
• Follows the laboratory' s quality control policies, and records all quality control activities, instruments, and routine calibrations and maintenance performed. Reviews peer quality control data.
• Performs regular preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and processes. Prints, reviews, and signs off on maintenance logs.
• Executes venipunctures, heelsticks, fingersticks, and other specimen collection methods on all suitable patients, within and outside of the hospital, in a competent manner that lessens the need for repeat collections or objections
• Gathers and processes specimens for urine drug screens and breath alcohol following the federal regulations.
• Processes outpatients, inpatients, emergency department patients, and patients outside the hospital facility by requesting the proper testing and having the proper distribution listed.
• Allocates reports by fax, mail, or in-house distribution to the correct physician and/or location.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associate' s Degree in Medical Biology
• Must have completed MLS or MT course
• Numerical ability necessary to calculate test results using standard formulas, and to measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
• Outstanding documentation skills
• Must be detail oriented.
• Excellent computer skills
• Must be able to work independently without constant direct supervision.
• Strong judgment to assess information against measurable criteria in the performance of tests.
• A preference for activities carried out according to established procedures and methods in performing laboratory tests.
• A preference for scientific and technical activities needed to perform a great variety of laboratory tests and to keep up with the latest innovations in methods of testing.
• Color discrimination essential to stain slides and to differentiate various shades and colors of specimens.
• Medical Laboratory Scientist, M.L.S, or Medical Technologist, M.T., Certification (ASCP); or Registry eligible; or Technologist with equivalent training and practical laboratory experience; or per CLIA' 88 regulations for a Technologist for high complexity testing
• Registry eligible Technologists are urged to take the Registry examination expediently. If the Registry is not completed within one year, the Technologist' s status will be re-evaluated by the Laboratory Manager, Section Head Technologist(s), and the Pathologist/Medical Director.

• Prior phlebotomy and technical experience is preferred.
• Former experience in a laboratory setting
