Department Summary
The Communication and Events Office at the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) manages and communicates the school's brand and key messages to advance the strategic objectives and goals of the school and the university, including recruiting students and faculty, stewarding alumni and donors, and building the national reputation of the school.
The Communication and Events Office plans and executes the school's overall marketing and communication strategy; actively manages and directs the school's website and social media presences; plans, creates, produces, and distributes collateral and marketing pieces, including the annual yearbook, viewbooks, e-newsletters, brochures, blogs, advertisements, videos, and editorial content; and develops and administers the school's graphic design, writing, user interface, and logo usage standards and guidelines in accordance with the university's overall marketing strategy and brand standards.
Position Summary
Reporting to the SOJCs director of communication, the managing editor of digital and editorial content writes and edits both marketing and journalistic copy and provides editorial support for print and digital publications and collateral distributed by the school. This includes but is not limited to writing for marketing materials, websites, social media, newsletters, news stories, and calendar postings.
The managing editor of digital and editorial content works closely with the communication team to develop editorial strategy, seek out and develop story ideas, and foster relationships with UO and alumni sources. The position is responsible for planning, coordinating, writing, and editing SOJC news stories, marketing communication projects, and publications; copy-editing and proofreading; supervising student writers; and performing other duties as a creative contributor to the Communication and Events Office.
Minimum Requirements
Three years of experience as a public relations representative for an organization that involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, or interaction with the news media.
At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program. This can include leading the planning and management of major publications, websites, marketing projects, etc.
A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.
Professional Competencies
Expertise in developing and/or implementing editorial strategy and marketing campaigns.
Expert knowledge of AP Style, Chicago Manual of Style, and grammar.
Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and storytelling.
Ability to project-manage multimedia projects and publications.
Ability to balance multiple projects and be self-directed
Attention to detail and copy-editing skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a collaborative part of a creative team.
Preferred Qualifications
Communications experience in a higher education environment.
Experience with both journalistic and marketing writing.
Experience managing digital content, including web, email, and social media communications.
Experience using content marketing and social media to achieve institutional goals.
Experience with project management software such as Asana, Basecamp, Trello, or Wrike.
Experience managing or advising junior employees or interns.
Experience working with diverse audiences and backgrounds.
