Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7AM to 3:30PM with rotating weekend and holidays.
Position Summary
Laboratory Specialist utilize biological and chemical theoretical knowledge obtained in a formal university setting to learn practical concepts of laboratory medicine. This position performs laboratory procedures as outlined in the procedure manual, as instructed during training and as outlined in instrument manuals. This position is intended to be an intermediary step in gaining national certification in laboratory disciplines.
Principle Accountabilities / Responsibilities
* Is an active participant in the educational process as this position is intended to bridge between academic background of a biology or chemistry degree and the principles of disciplines chosen in laboratory science
* Assures proper specimen processing is followed as prescribed in procedure manual to prevent adverse patient outcome
* Provides accurate patient test results by following approved policies and procedures to assist physicians in patient evaluation and assessment.
* Performs quality control, calibration and instrument maintenance in accordance with department procedures, instrument manuals and bench assignments to assure the validity of test results
* Continually updates person skills via continuing education, in-service programs often offered by instrument vendors but not limited to these specific avenues. Member of this job title are responsible for maintaining continuing education requirement for maintaining accreditation.
* Contributes to cost containment by appropriate utilization of supplies and disposal of waste.
* Performs laboratory related activities as directed by leadership.
* Problem solving and troubleshooting are routine expectations of this position.
* Results are reported in a timely manner to include any special handling of critical values to endure good patient care.
* Understands and is an active participant in the concept of teamwork; this includes offering and accepting assistance in task completion.
* Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills
* This position demands strong attention to detail and consistent documentation.
Education and Certification Requirements
* Bachelor of Science degree or higher in biological sciences or chemistry.
* Degree must include at least 24 semester hours of science courses. Within the minimum 24 hours included at least 6 semester must be chemistry courses, 6 semester hours must be in biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical technology in and combination.
Experience
Previous experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
Work requires some physical effort. Frequent walking, sitting, standing, typing, grasping and twisting with both hands. Lifting or performing other work requiring light physical exertion (up to 30 pounds) is required.
Environmental Conditions
Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions or undesirable elements; may involve exposure to a variety specimen types or reagents that could be potentially hazardous or harmful. All require personnel to exercise precautions for protection from injury or illness.
