Summary:

The Staff Attorney I supports the Legal department by performing routine legal tasks related to the credit union's everyday operations and needs of its members. This position will support other members of the legal department as directed.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and legal counsel to the organization on basic legal issues relating to credit union business.
  • Review/analyze/negotiate various legal documents, including, but not limited to, powers of attorney, garnishments/levies, trust certifications and applications, subpoenas, letters testamentary, letters of conservatorship, NDAs, vendor contracts, etc., to determine acceptability based on credit union practices and procedures. Effectively communicate issues or concerns to relevant departments or business leaders.
  • Correspond with other departments as necessary regarding a wide-variety of issues posed and/or questions raised during day-to-day operations. Provide accurate feedback in simple, easy-to-understand language for staff at all levels within the organization.
  • Coordinate with other departments to help prepare responses to member complaints as needed.
  • Perform legal research as necessary in response to lawsuits or industry legal activity to protect the interests of the credit union.
  • May assist with preparation and filing of motions, pleadings, briefs and other legal correspondence in response to legal action against, or on behalf of, the credit union. May correspond with members or outside counsel to attempt non-litigation resolution of matters at issue.
  • Track legal assignments sent to outside counsel, and work with accounting as necessary to ensure proper billing.
  • Update department reporting monthly, including the legal matters tracker and dashboard, to ensure accurate tracking of current legal matters being addressed within the department and other matters potentially on the horizon.
  • Stay abreast of new or developing legal issues impacting financial institutions and proactively communicate issues or concerns to the Legal department.
  • Assist with implementation and improvement of processes for a more efficient workflow within the department and the organization as a whole.
  • Ensure full compliance with credit union service standards, policies, and procedures, as well as all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and license to practice, preferably in TX or CA. Other states (AZ or NV) may be considered. Must be in good standing with relevant state Bar.
  • At least 2 years' experience practicing law
  • Experience reviewing and negotiating various legal documents required
  • Some familiarity with regulations and the regulatory bodies relevant to financial institutions strongly preferred. Credit union knowledge is a big plus.
  • Knowledge of laws relevant to financial institution operational areas and functions, such as lending, collections, consumer privacy, consumer protection, etc. strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of financial institution general products and services extremely useful
  • Must be a team player and with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Patience and the ability to break-down legal matters into everyday language for staff members at all levels within the organization to understand is essential
  • Must be able to work efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The ability to pivot and shift priorities/focus quickly is needed to be successful in this role.
  • Must be highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • The highest levels of integrity and legal ethics are required
  • This may be a remote work role. If working remotely, person must be able to work effectively and accurately with limited direct oversight.
