Job Summary

To collect blood samples, give information to callers, and otherwise relieve personnel of clerical and minor clinical, administrative business detail.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Lab Technician performs the following duties as assigned.


  • Obtains patient blood samples from various body sites, observing principles of asepsis and applying knowledge of age-related factors appropriately to patients. Age groups of patients served are Neonate, Infant, Toddler, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Older Adult.
  • Greets customers, ascertains nature of business, and directs or conducts customers to appropriate person or department.
  • Process various specimens for testing, referral, or storage.
  • Perform limited clinical test.
  • Pick up samples and deliver reports to offsite clients.
  • Access computer terminal for data entry or information retrieval.
  • Collate reports for files, data processing, and medical records.
  • Answers telephone and gives information to callers or routes to appropriate person and places outgoing calls.
  • Files reports and other records
  • Makes copies of reports or other printed matter, using copying or duplication machine.
  • Maintains stocks of expendable supplies.
  • Sends or delivers reports to appropriate locations.
  • Picks up and delivers mail.
  • Instructs patients or responsible family member in collection of various body fluids, applying age related appropriately to patients. Age groups of patients served are Neonate, Infant, Toddler, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Older Adult
  • Makes charges for requested tests.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others.
  • Ability to comply with all the Center's policy and procedures that are job-related and consistent with business necessity.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients and provide competent care as appropriate to the ages of patients served by this position.
  • Regularly attends unit meetings/in-services.
  • Maintains applicable licensure & certifications.
  • Completes mandatory educational requirements.
  • Completes competency/skills assessments as required.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English language.
  • Ability to document alpha and numeric values to conform to lab standards.
  • Ability to speak extemporaneously on a variety of subjects.
  • Use logical thinking and personal judgement to perform a variety of clinical and office tasks that require special skills and knowledge.
  • Make decisions based on your own judgement and company policy.
  • Follow instructions without close supervision.
  • Speak and write clearly and accurately.
  • Plan your own work and sometimes the work of others.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
  • Ability to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones and copiers.


Credentials and Experience


Required

  • Required completion of a phlebotomy training course.
  • High school graduate preferred, OR, an equivalent level of education and experience.


Preferred

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred (CPT)
  • Experience in field preferred.
