Microbiologist III
Under minimal supervision of the Consumer Microbiology Group Manager, and in coordination with the Media Preparation Team Lead, follows standard protocols, serves as Senior Technician for the Media Production Area and the activities of Team personnel in accordance to ISO 17025 and other regulatory agencies; assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of new procedures and a Quality Assurance system for the Media Preparation Team. Assists with the training of Team members; and presents project updates to the Consumer Microbiology Group Manager. Assists with the maintenance of inventory and stock control records for the Media Preparation Team. Duties performed with considerable latitude to interpret standard protocol, and with considerable use of initiative, scientific knowledge, and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions:
EJF 1. Serves as Senior Technician for the compliance of the Media Preparation Team with ISO 17025 and other regulatory agencies. Serves as the Team's resource for the Media Production Team in accordance to ISO guidelines and other regulatory agencies. Assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of new procedures. Assists with updating or revising Standard Operating Procedures to comply with requirements of ISO 17025 and other regulatory agencies. Monitors annual review of SOP's for the Media Preparation Team. Documents all quality control and work performed in a clear and concise manner using approved standard forms and worksheets in compliance with ISO 17025 and other regulatory agencies. Assists with reviewing the master list of media recipe forms in WASP, and consults with WASP technicians in the troubleshooting of inventory software. Assists with Quality Assurance duties which include writing up corrective action logs and maintaining training logs for team members. Ensures that corrective and preventive action plans are adequate and verifies that they are implemented. Develops, implements and reviews policies and procedures in the Media Preparation Team to ensure that quality systems are effective and that appropriate regulatory and certification/licensing requirements are met. Consults federal publications and confers with regulatory officials as needed. Assumes duties in the absence of the Team Lead. (45%)
EJF 2. Coordinates assignments of Team personnel to insure maximum productivity of media and reagents. Insures that all media and reagents are prepared according to standard protocols and delivered to specified areas. Reviews work of Team's personnel for accuracy and proper documentation. Insures that adequate supplies of components are maintained to produce media and reagents. Assists and reviews the inventory of stock and reagents daily for the Media Preparation Team. Assists with the SAO inventory submission performed biannually for the laboratory. Reviews, approves, and submits reagent orders to Team Lead for purchasing requests and fiscal year contracts. Assists laboratory personnel with media/reagent, and glassware problems and resolves problems. Assists with the logistical and technical matters concerning the scheduling of media products and implements changes to schedule as needed to accommodate changing needs of customers. (30%)
EJF 3. Provides professional consultation and technical assistance to the Media Preparation Staff, laboratory management, public heath personnel, regulatory officials and external customers. Researches and interprets regulatory requirements and serves as the primary contact in the Media Preparation Team for regulating agencies. Provides guidance to management and staff in the development and implementation of new methods and procedures. Assist with the training of the Media Preparation personnel and provides performance feedback of team members to Team Lead and Group Manager. Identifies training needs, provides regular training and documents training as appropriate. Assists with the evaluation of the competency of personnel to perform procedures and reports results to Team Lead for appropriate action. (20%)
EJF 4. Performs other duties as assigned. Based on your work area, consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state and federal guidelines to ensure a safe functioning laboratory. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or servicing in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require and alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Participates in weekend/holiday rotation for the Media Preparation Team as needed. (5%)
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of microbiological and chemical principles and techniques, specifically knowledge and skills in media and reagent production and their quality control. Knowledge of computer programs, especially data bases and word processing. Knowledge of quality assurance and statistical methods in laboratory analysis. Knowledge of customer service practices. Ability to plan and organize work, train employees, delegate responsibilities, evaluates employee performances, address and properly document technical and personnel problems. Ability to maintain a current inventory of stock and insure acquisition of necessary supplies. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to use various items of laboratory equipment, such as autoclaves, balances, pH meters,and glassware washing machines, including use of a computer for word processing, spreadsheet and database analysis. Ability to supervise staff, work independently, work in harmony with other team members. Ability to develop, update and follow standard operating procedures and protocols. Ability to keep accurate detailed records. Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities. Ability to analyze complex scientific and regulatory information and reach an appropriate conclusion. Ability to work independently and make technical decisions based on review of data, professional knowledge and experience. Skill in manipulating and troubleshoot standard laboratory equipment with speed, accuracy and safety. Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Prefer a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or
Prefer an earned associate's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Experience and education may be substituted as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA '88) Standards.
Initial Selection Criteria:
Experience working in a research, clinical, environmental or media production laboratory. (Required)
Prefer a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or Prefer an earned associate's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Experience and education may be substituted as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA '88) Standards. (Preferred)
Experience with all phases of media preparation. (Preferred)
Experience with quality assurance functions. (Preferred)
Experience with Quality Control.(Preferred)

Experience with working with regulatory agencies such as FDA and requirements established by ISO 17025. (Preferred)
