Corporate & Investment Banking delivers a comprehensive suite of capital markets, banking, and financial products and services. A trusted partner to our clients, we provide corporate and transactional banking; commercial real estate lending and servicing; investment banking; equity; and fixed income solutions including sales, trading, and research capabilities to corporate, commercial real estate, government, and institutional clients across the globe.

This position is within the CIB Control organization and will be responsible for the management and further development of the internal risk control platform and the Control team supporting the CRE Real Estate Banking (REB), Specialty Real Estate Finance (SREF), and REIT Finance Group (RFG) businesses. In addition to specific business-aligned responsibilities, the position requires subject matter expertise and program development for all of CRE as it relates enterprise risk programs and operational risk programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing risk management leadership and expertise on applicable bank policies and related risk and control process requirements. The leader will be responsible for leading risk identification, assessment, escalation, and mitigation strategies, and managing a team of professionals that perform programmatic day-to-day risk and control activities in support of and partnership with front line business teams.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Act as the key point of contact in CIB Control for senior leaders in CRE, Independent Risk Management, Internal Audit, regulators, and other constituents related to: 1) CRE business coverage teams' risk and control requirements, performance, and enhancement efforts; and, 2) Process, risk, and internal control program development as applicable across the REB, SREF, and RFG businesses.
  • Manage and develop a professional team with a strong working knowledge of the products, services, applicable regulations and policies, business processes, systems, and customers for the REB, SREF and RFG businesses, including the key risk requirements and controls that apply to the business, to serve as the primary day-to-day coverage officers, requiring proven knowledge of products, services, applicable regulations and policies, business processes, systems, and customers in the business. Serve as the Control team lead for risk governance and as the escalation point for all control issues for the REB, SREF, and RFG businesses.
  • Continuously engage in discussions with LOB partners on strategy, industry trends, organizational changes, and new/modified markets, systems, products and services, to determine impact and identify and remediate risk and control issues across all risk types.
  • Internal Control Program (ICP) and Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA): Partner with LOB counterparts and process engineering team to establish/maintain process maps, guide complete process risk and control evaluations, identification and documentation of controls, and to implement self-assurance and independent testing and validation efforts.
  • Issue / Incident Management and Loss Capture: Lead the team to document and assess control weaknesses and operational risk incidents using methods such as root cause analysis. Consult with business process owners to develop corrective action plans and control redesign. Oversee implementation progress and conduct control evaluation efforts as required. Coordinate with business and support partners for creation of Self-Disclosed issues in Issues Management system of record. Record losses in the system of record, as applicable.
  • Management Reporting: Establish and update recurring and timely reports on risks, initiatives, and deliverables for communication with business leaders and risk partners.
  • Exams / Reviews: Conduct advanced planning and coordination with appointed business contacts and internal testing and examination engagement leaders/teams such as Independent Testing and Validation (IT&V), Internal Audit, and Regulatory exams.
  • Control development, projects & platform initiatives: Develop business cases to influence process owners, control owners, business sponsors, and key risk partners on the need for additional or improved controls to mitigate risk; Work with the business and support teams to provide operational risk expertise and consulting for projects and platform initiatives, taking into account impacts to risk & control framework.

There is emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit's risk appetite and all risk and compliance program requirements.



Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in risk management or 10+ years of financial services industry experience, of which 7+ years must include direct experience in risk management
  • 3+ years of management experience



Other Desired Qualifications
  • Strong experience in a CRE line of business or Front Line risk control position.
  • Strong awareness of industry trends and related risk, technology, and process developments.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience in risk management practices and applicable systems and applications used across CRE.
  • Prior experience in risk process improvement, standardization and automation of business and control processes, quality assurance and control routines, and risk and control metrics and reporting. Experience designing efficient control frameworks across complex and multi-jurisdictional regulatory frameworks and risk types.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including past hiring and building of effective and loyal teams as well as influence, partnership support, and productive impact on broader teams outside of direct management control. Collaborative team player, able to translate prior business knowledge and experience into strong and productive relationships internally and externally to achieve goals and improve business performance.
  • A Masters or Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
  • Strong work ethic, including being enthusiastic and deliverables- and performance-oriented, with a demonstrated bias toward proactive communication and responsiveness to in-flight demands.
  • Ability to synthesize data and observations from a variety of sources, deliver succinct summaries (both verbal and written), and enact response quickly.
  • Experience with the monitoring and implementation of risk management requirements, systems and controls, on a global basis.
  • Capable of diagnosing business needs, conceptualizing and initiating planning, organizing the enlistment of response teams, and the implementation and management of change.
  • Personal ability to understand and operate successfully in a complex, heavily matrixed corporate environment.
  • Experience and effectiveness with interacting with outside overseers, including regulators and auditors.
