Reports to: Chief Underwriter

The primary job function will be to provide loan underwriting and closing oversight as well as research-related support for the FHA-insured mortgage loans originated through the LEAN and MAP programs. In addition, there will be opportunities to become exposed to the other financing products offered by the firm, including Fannie Mae-backed mortgage loans, USDA-guaranteed loans, tax-exempt bonds and balance sheet lending.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

o Maintain an expert understanding of applicable internal as well as FHA policies and procedures as outlined in the internal Policies and Procedures Manual, FHA MAP Guide, LEAN Handbook and other applicable references.

o Critically evaluate appraisals, market studies, project capital need assessments, project/personal financial statements, credit reports, insurance policies, and any other documents needed to development sound underwriting conclusions.

o Understand physical characteristics of commercial real estate properties, assessing the related competitive advantages and disadvantages and applying to project proposals.

o Structure the underwriting and financing aspects of transactions to create the proper balance of feasibility and risk.

o Review and analyze legal contracts such as applications, commitments and loan documents.

o Interface with clients and other project participants to obtain necessary documentation and appropriately manage the underwriting, review and closing processes.

o Keep management and bankers informed of project specific progress and issues on a proactive basis so as to facilitate smooth execution of engaged transactions.

o Assist in origination efforts as needed by evaluating provided project information, preparing preliminary loan analyses, offering needed technical advice and leading needed preliminary interactions with our internal credit committee and/or HUD staff.

o Serve as mentor to assigned analysts, and associates so as to further develop their technical capacities and support their career progression.

o Develop strong business relationships with HUD production staff so as to expand their confidence in company capabilities.

o Review, and recommend continued improvements to the underwriting and application process as well as training for analyst/associate and business development roles.

Desired Qualities:

o Strong finance, credit, legal, real estate and/or business background; MBA or advanced degree preferred

o Minimum of 3+ years of experience in commercial real estate and/or underwriting

o Strong knowledge of health care and senior living sectors

o FHA "MAP" and/or "LEAN" underwriter approval preferred

o Excellent oral and written communication skills

o Requires an independent worker with strong project management skills, excellent accuracy/attention to details, and an ability to adjust to ever changing business environment.

o Willingness to work long hours, including some weekends, to accommodate project deadlines

o Must possess extensive PC skills including: email, spreadsheet and word processing.

o Willingness and ability to travel for site inspection and/or business development support.
