Sr. Legal Specialist, Commercial Real Estate

The Role and the Team:

The Capital One Commercial Real Estate Legal Department is seeking an experienced Legal Specialist (Paralegal) with commercial real estate experience. This is an opportunity to join an outstanding team at a Fortune 100 Company that is consistently voted one of the best places to work in the U.S.

The Commercial Real Estate (CRE) business is a segment within the Commercial Bank that provides permanent and construction financing for a broad range of project types, including multifamily housing, office buildings, and industrial facilities, as well as financing for REITS, real estate funds, and bridge lending.

The CRE Legal Specialist will assist with day to day legal responsibilities for the CRE Legal team and will provide direct support to the CRE in-house attorneys and the CRE business team by working with outside counsel and the Closing team on transactions. This role will also assist with various items needed by the business team, such as Non-Disclosure Agreements, assisting with systems and programs, billing matters and set up, and PowerPoint decks as needed by CRE Legal.

Responsibilities:

The CRE Legal Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing support to CRE attorneys and business teams on commercial real estate transactions, including assistance with due diligence, closing checklists, document execution and deal document files
  • Maintaining an accurate portfolio breakdown and tracking related to outside counsel allocations and capacity
  • Managing form document libraries and licensing for legal entities
  • Assisting attorneys with quarterly reports and other presentations
  • Working with internal counsel and business clients to ensure compliance with, and improvement of, business practices, policies and procedures
  • Engaging with third party service providers to the legal department (e.g., Xtract, Covenant Review and Street Diligence)
  • Managing intake and review of non-disclosure and non-reliance agreements
  • Coordinating with the underwriting and operations functions on Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings and terminations and conducting periodic UCC audits
  • Other tasks as needed by the legal department or business


Here's what we're looking for in an ideal teammate:
  • Paralegal experience with an in-house legal department or law firm, with preference to a background in commercial real estate.
  • Strong organizational skills with impeccable attention to detail
  • The ability to prioritize and manage a significant volume of work on a broad array of topics with multiple and simultaneous deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team player to manage efficient processes, to get issues resolved across organizational boundaries, and to build collegial and effective relationships with business leaders, attorneys, paralegals, project managers and administrative assistants at all levels of the company
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to manage complex processes and projects
  • Strong analytical and oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence others


Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification
  • At least 2 years of paralegal experience with either an in-house legal department or a law firm
  • At least 2 years of experience using either Google Workspace (formerly G Suite - Gmail and Google Docs and Drive) or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of paralegal experience with either an in-house legal department or a law firm with a focus on commercial real estate
  • Bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate
