Job description

General Function:

Supervise operation of the Materials Engineering and Research (MER) Lab, including supervision and training of Technicians and Technologists; layout, checkout and maintenance of lab facilities and scheduling.

Here is what you can expect in this role:

* The Lab Manager or Lab Supervisor is accountable for coordinating and prioritizing development, testing and analysis activities of the MER laboratory.
* He/She must be capable of assessing & prioritizing the needs of the MER engineers, other support staff and operations in order to ensure customer commitments are met.
* The incumbent reports directly to the Materials Engineering Manager (MEM) and has technical cognizance over the personnel within the Laboratory.
* The incumbent has daily contact with engineering and management personnel from other departments, in order to effectively schedule the use of lab equipment and/or personnel and establish priorities between departments.

It is within this overall framework that the incumbent is directly responsible for the following key functions:

* In conjunction with the MEM, plans and schedules lab work.
* In conjunction with the cognizant engineers, provides technical guidance to Lab personnel in performing their tasks.
* Interviewing, rating and selection of personnel. The incumbent conducts performance reviews of personnel under his/her supervision.
* Maintaining up‑to‑date records and a recall system for documentation of lab activities/schedule, as well as documentation of test results and reports.
* Calibration and maintenance of lab related equipment.
* Training lab personnel. Assuring there is adequate cross-training to assure ability to rapidly respond to increased demand or unplanned projects.
* Improvements in equipment and procedures to provide for streamlined work processes, reduced costs, improved service, and increased overall productivity.
* This individual will be a working supervisor, as these responsibility will leave time available to work projects as an individual contributor.

Basic Qualifications:

* This position requires a level of high laboratory abilities sufficient to understand the laboratory equipment and procedures.
* Bachelor's degree in a physical science or materials science preferred. An Associate's in a physical science, or materials science with a combination of laboratory and supervisory experience will be considered.
* Three years of laboratory experience
* One year of supervisory experience
* This position will require access to US export controlled information
