Lab Specialist Intermediate employees engage in laboratory research by performing complex lab and research related tasks. They are distinguished from Lab Specialist employees by their additional responsibilities related to developing, designing, and conducting increasingly complex research projects. They perform complex tasks independently. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. They may supervise support personnel and manage budgets.

The Biology Department is seeking a Genomics Lab Specialist Intermediate for its Sequencing Facility. The Lab Specialist Intermediate is responsible for all scientific operations and facility management aspects required to run the facility. The Lab Specialist Intermediate will have primary responsibility for all technical laboratory duties required to perform sequencing reactions in our facility, and to advise about and/or prepare for sequencing-based experiments submitted to external facilities.

Duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

• Training facility users in genomic technologies, preparing and evaluating DNA/cDNA sequencing libraries
• Performing next-gen and Sanger sequencing
• Integrating these activities with Biology laboratories and external facilities.
• Purchasing and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment
• Creation and implementation of facility operating policies and procedures
• Oversight of the facility's operating budget, and the marketing of facility services to prospective clients.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

Preferred Experience:

• A strong background in Molecular Biology laboratory methods and techniques.

• The ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with researchers and clientele
• Ability to work collaboratively with scientists and other facility users
• Computer literacy, including some experience with DNA sequence data and related web-based applications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

COVID Vaccination Requirement

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption.
