Job description

The Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports, a division of Athletics at the University of Virginia, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Lifeguard (a part-time, wage position). Lifeguards work at both the Aquatic & Fitness and North Grounds Recreation Center aquatics facilities.

Lifeguards will:

*Supervise the activities of swimmers by enforcing rules and regulations

*Attend and participate in all staff meetings and in-services

*Must be willing and able to work scheduled university breaks including Fall Break, November, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer

*Must be willing to work some opening and closing shifts when available

*Work a minimum of 2-3 shifts per month

*Maintain scheduled shifts and provide periodic supervision of entire pool area, including locker rooms

*Assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related areas and facilities

*Warn swimmers of improper activities or hazards, answer any questions pertaining to pool. Be able to refer to Aquatic manager any outstanding concerns from patrons

*Perform rescues of persons in distress or in danger of drowning when indicated and provide emergency care as needed

*Notify the Aquatic Manager of any accidents, rescues, or problems that have arisen within or relating to the pool area, including any equipment that is in need of repair

*Successfully and positively perform within work team dynamics

*Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Aquatic Manager or of equal supervision

* Serve University of Virginia and the Intramural-Recreational Sports Department in a respectful, professional, and positive manner

This is a wage position which is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work in a year. For more information, refer to the Wage Employment link:

Position Compensation Range: $12.00 - $13.00 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience: current certification and/or some experience

Licensure: American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED, First Aid Certification; YMCA Lifeguard Certification; ELLIS

COVID Vaccination Requirement

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption. The University has updated policy SEC-045 to reflect these new requirements.
