Job description
Duties
- Performs routine field sampling and analysis of water by:
- Obtaining water samples from natural sources (rivers, streams and reservoirs), drinking water sources (consumers, sample stations, water mains and tanks), and various stages during and after the treatment process. Analyzing water samples for pH, chlorine, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and other tests using approved methods such as Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
- Collecting water samples at tanks, distribution sites and water treatment plants and performing field tests to comply with the Total Coliform Rule.
- Transporting collected samples between treatment plant facilities.
- Performing system monitoring to include chlorine analysis at fire hydrants, tanks and other locations.
- Assisting with c sampling at water treatment plants for chemical analysis.
- Assisting with special project sample collection.
- Maintaining and assuring field and laboratory records are accurate, legible, and on time.
- Entering field analysis results into a hand-held data terminal, downloading data into a Laboratory Information Management System, and verifying sampling data.
- Complying with Fairfax Water and Laboratory policies and procedures.
- Performs general laboratory maintenance activities by:
- Assisting in the preparation of sample collection containers and coolers according to computerized chain of custody records.
- Cleaning and acid washing glassware and other equipment required for sampling and laboratory operations.
- Maintaining and restocking chemical supplies required for field and laboratory operations.
- Collect customer samples to assess water quality-related concerns.\
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
- Two-year science degree or any equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge.
- Knowledge of general sampling techniques.
- Novice level of computer knowledge (some experience with Microsoft Word and Excel).
- Knowledge of the operation and care of standard field testing equipment such as pH meters, photometers and other related apparatus.
- Ability to accurately perform basic field tests required for a water utility.
- Ability to perform work in a safe and timely manner.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical operations such as percentages, ratios, proportions and conversions.
- Ability to operate communication systems (e.g. portable radios, cell phones, etc.).
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers and to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Available for assignments at both Fairfax Water treatment plant facilities.
- Ability to work overtime as required.
- Available to work periodic rotating Standby shift.
- Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment
- Fairfax Water requires new employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to legally required exceptions.
Supplemental Information
- Ability to lift coolers weighing approximately 25 pounds.
- Ability to distinguish colors and odors associated with laboratory testing and analysis.
- Manual dexterity that is necessary in handling laboratory and field equipment.
- Ability to operate, or learn to operate an outboard engine-powered sampling boat.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Ability to swim.
- Ability to handle known toxic chemicals, taking all necessary precautions to prevent undue exposure to self, fellow workers and the environment.
- Ability to safely climb elevated storage tanks.
