Security Officer (HR3471)

The University Police Department (UPD) at Old Dominion University is accepting applications for multiple Security Officer (Security Officer III) positions. The Security Officer will provide security services for Old Dominion University. Other duties include: monitor main and satellite campus grounds to ensure staff, students and visitors are safe, make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis, and identify and assist with the investigation of minor or suspicious matters.

Required Education:

High school diploma or GED. Some training in security work.

Required Qualifications:

Basic familiarity with personal computers to include Microsoft Office, Outlook etc. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions to complete assigned tasks and reports. Ability to perform essential physical requirements which include standing and/or walking for extended periods. Ability to perform required tasks during periods of inclement weather. Ability to maintain a neat and clean appearance/uniform and report for duty on time. Ability to provide security services which includes working inside and outside of building during various hours of the day.

Special License, Registration, Certification:

Valid driver's license and insurable record. Ability to obtain the DCJS CSO Campus Security Officer Certification within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate degree. Member of professional security organization i.e., ASIS International, CCP (Certified Protection Professional). Some experience and training as a Campus Security Officer. Some experience working with security related technologies, surveillance cameras, access control etc. Self-directed and ability to take direction.

Conditions of Employment:

In accordance with Executive Directive #18 issued by Governor Ralph Northam effective September 1, 2021, all Old Dominion University employees who enter the workplace or work remotely must disclose their vaccine status to the designated university personnel. Employees who are not fully vaccinated or who refuse to disclose their current vaccine status, must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and disclose weekly the results of those tests to designated university personnel.


University Police Department employees are considered essential personnel for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during these conditions.

Must work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Some overtime required.

This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate.

Hourly (wage) employees are restricted to working 29 hours per week on average or 1500 hours in total in the May 1 - April 30 period. This position does not have health insurance, retirement or leave.
