Overview

Afton Chemical Corporation is part of the NewMarket Corporation (NYSE: NEU) family of companies, and is one of the largest global suppliers of lubricant additives and offers a broad line of fuel additives worldwide.

The Senior EHS Specialist will lead Product Stewardship activities and EHS support for one or more designated business units, coordinating chemical registrations and handling complex customer and regulatory issues with minimal supervision. Demonstrate strong knowledge of hazard communication, chemical control regulations, and sustainability as it relates to the chemical industry. Work on defined projects to ensure that Afton is in regulatory compliance and meets the EHS requirements of internal/external customers. May have some supervisory responsibility.

Responsibilities

* Lead EHS support for a designated business unit(s) working proactively to mitigate EHS risks.
* Advise R&D/SBU on new formulation and component development to minimize EHS risk and avoid chemicals of concern. Communicate issues and impacts related to various GHS classifications to the business unit and R&D.
* Manage global registration activities related to new chemical notifications to ensure that registrations align with business plans.
* Support customer sustainability programs including areas related to life cycle assessment, sustainability surveys/ratings, and biobased raw materials.
* Coordinate with customers on key sustainability topics and initiatives and develop processes to support customer requirements.
* Respond to internal and external customer EHS inquiries.
* Ensure regulatory compliance related to the business unit(s).
* Champion support for one or more global or large regional customers.
* Coordinate trade secrecy protection necessary to protect proprietary product content information.
* Monitor the development of international chemical legislation in designated countries and advise on the impacts to Afton.
* Represent Afton in trade associations and industry working groups.
* Support company policies and procedures including Responsible Care©.
* May be required to develop, motivate and guide direct reports to ensure their knowledge and capabilities are aligned with goals.
* Assist EHS colleagues and support activities as necessary in all EHS areas including Product Stewardship, Toxicology, Regulatory Affairs, Environmental, Site Safety & Process Safety.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE MINIMUMS:

* Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science or related field.
* Demonstrated understanding of Product Stewardship and EHS functions typically acquired through 7 or more years of relevant or related experience.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

* Masters of Science Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Toxicology, Sustainability or related field.
* Demonstrated understanding or Product Stewardship and EHS functions typically acquired through 10 or more years of relevant or related experience.
* Experience supervising and/or developing others.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

* Understands the chemistry, function and applications of additives & formulations of assigned product lines, pro-actively advising formulators of ways to reduce hazards and risks of products.
* Demonstrated knowledge of key drivers for sustainability including life cycle assessments, carbon footprint, circular economy, etc.
* Expert knowledge of global hazard communication standards and global/regional chemical regulatory schemes.
* Able to manage complex customer, business and R&D issues with limited supervision.
* Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills which are clear, concise and effective.
* Demonstrates excellent advocacy and negotiation skills.
* Able to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines with limited supervision.
* Able to interpret, summarize and convey complex information.
* Demonstrates creativity and innovative planning and decision making to facilitate resolution of issues.
* Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills.
