Job description

Performs technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the performance and recording of waived and specified moderate complexity tests and tasks under the direction of Medical Technologists. Participates in performing the quality control and proficiency testing required for those same tests. Maintains current professional knowledge and skills to independently perform dermal puncture and venipuncture on all age groups (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric). Maintains competencies in a variety of special collections as defined by checklist.

In the execution of job duties, it is the universal expectation that all tasks are performed with a patient centered focus, while also seeking opportunities to continually improve core processes. Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need, which may include but is not limited to: holidays, extended shifts, night and/or weekend shifts, standby and/or on-call. Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent □ Preferred X Required

Associate's Degree X Preferred □ Required

Required: or GED equivalent. Preferred: Formal Phlebotomy or MA certificate program, Nursing Program or Laboratory Educational Program.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications:

Applicant must possess at least one of the license, certifications or registrations list below or equivalent national certification within 18 months of hires.

Phlebotomy Technician (PBT ASCP) or equivalent certification, Certified Medical Assistant, Virginia State License as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP MLS), Medical Lab Technician (ASCP MLT)

Minimum Work Experience

Required - 6 months full time equivalent general phlebotomy or waived/moderate Laboratory testing experience

Preferred - 12 months full time hospital-based phlebotomy and waived/moderate lab testing experience
