Shenandoah University's Office of Human Resources is accepting applications for an Employee Relations and Organizational Development Specialist. This is a full-time benefitted position that's located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia. Moreover, this position will provide coaching, support, training, advice, conflict resolution, and guidance to employees. Additionally, the position reports to the Director of Human Resources.

The primary responsibilities are:

  • Provide coaching, support, and guidance to employees on issues dealing with performance management, dispute/conflict resolution, workplace concerns, and disciplinary matters.
  • Advises and trains managers and supervisors in the best employee relations practices and strategies for managing supervisor problems and employee concerns.
  • Oversee the career development of employees within the university.
  • Conduct new hire orientations, exit interviews, summarize findings, discusses trends, and concerns management issues.
  • Conduct investigations and work closely with the Director of Human Resources and the Title IX coordinator.
  • Train employees on Human Resources issues and practices. Develop further training as needed.
  • Consult with management to determine measures required to enhance employee job performance and the overall university's performance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Required Skills

The qualified candidate should possess the following:
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, counseling, and negotiations skills.
  • Detailed-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of policies and federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Thorough understanding of dispute resolution and remain tactful and calm during controversial or confrontational situations.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment in dealing with complex situations.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management or related field.
  • Master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • SHRM Certification Professional (SHRM-CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credentials are preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role. Experience within higher education is preferred.
