Job description

Job Title: Legislative Organizer (Temporary)

Department: Washington State Chapter

Location: Seattle, WA. This position may be remote, depending on the status of Sierra Club office re-openings and COVID-19 safety protocols. This position requires an ability to travel.

Reports To: Chapter Director

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice - a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.

Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: This position will support Sierra Club in implementing our legislative priorities for the 2022 state legislative session, with a focus on aiding volunteer lobbying efforts, mobilizing activists to take action to advance Sierra Club priorities, and supporting the Washington BlueGreen Alliance in growing support for policies at the intersection of environmental protection and economic justice. This is a temporary position for the 2022 Washington State Legislative session; the last day of employment will be March 25, 2022.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting Sierra Club Lobby Teams. Working in coordination with our Chapter Director, lobbyist, and volunteer Legislative Committee, you will support our legislative district-based volunteer teams doing outreach to their legislators on Sierra Club priorities. This might include tracking and reporting on legislative meetings, regular written communication to our Lobby Team volunteer list, helping with scheduling, advising on talking points, or researching follow-up requests.
  • Engaging and Mobilizing Sierra Club Supporters and Activists. You will take the lead on regular action opportunities that engage Sierra Club activists and volunteers, including by organizing and leading activities such as phone or text banks or Letter to the Editor workshops.
  • Creating Public Facing Written Content. Working closely with Sierra Club staff, you will be responsible for creating written communication to update our members and supporters about our legislative agenda, including newsletter articles, action alerts, email updates to volunteers, and social media content.
  • Supporting Our Partner and Coalition Efforts. This position will include a specific focus on supporting our shared priorities with the Washington BlueGreen Alliance (BGA). You will work closely with BGA staff on projects and assignments related to legislative priorities and growing support for policies that work to build a clean energy economy on a foundation of economic justice.

  • The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
    • Strong Communication Skills. You are a clear and concise written communicator and have excellent verbal communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to clearly articulate ideas and easily connect in one-on-one, small group, or public settings.
    • Experience in Organizing and Issue Advocacy. You have experience, either professional or in a volunteer capacity, in organizing and issue advocacy, including mobilizing supporters as part of a political, legislative, or issue campaign.
    • Effectiveness and Comfort in Working With Volunteers. You have shown an ability to collaborate with volunteers as genuine partners in your work.
    • Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:
    • Experience working in close partnership with other organizations to advance shared objectives.
    • Demonstrated passion for the environment and a basic knowledge of environmental issues facing Washington.
    • Familiarity with the state legislative process, or specific experience in state legislative advocacy.
    • Technical aptitude working with content creation platforms, social media platforms, and/or databases such as Salesforce or VAN.
