Job description

SUMMARY

Under minimal supervision this position establishes and recommends and implements improvements to production processes, quality and component producibility; contributes to product and component design focused on Design for Manufacturing. Reduces cost and lead times by implanting process improvements including programming, tool and machine selection, work holding design, and end of line test and inspection fixture design.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Creates, designs, modifies and improves complex manufacturing processes that produce intricate components with high precision in low, medium and high volumes. Translates dimensional requirements from mechanical drawings including GD&T into robust manufacturing processes with a focus on quality, reliability and cost. Design and implementation of tooling for machined metal and plastic components.
  • Programming CNC equipment manually in combination with tool path generating software. Interpret existing G-code and implement discrete adjustments for process improvements. Programming support for existing automation equipment including PLC's, industrial robotics and legacy and new test equipment. Design support for other process tools such as injection molds, deep draw dies, de-gating dies, etc. Prepares and modifies complex layouts, engineering drawings and sketches of work holding and test fixtures, tooling components, and schematics. Operates CAD equipment to perform the above.
  • Performs metal machining and machine design calculations to create and optimize machining programs and fixtures. Utilizes statistical methods to evaluate machine, process, and product capability. Initiates and accurately drafts Engineering Change Notices (ECN's). Reviews completed ECN's for overall impact. Performs complex dimensional stack-up analyses on new or existing products, tools and fixtures.
  • Dispositions parts and assemblies rejected by production. Investigates part discrepancies and directs necessary action and initiates changes to production processes, drawings and procedures. Analyzes and improves manufacturing techniques and processes by investigating existing procedures, tooling, costs, and alternate methods; implements necessary changes by cooperating with Manufacturing staff to improve component cost and quality.
  • Coordinates/directs the fabrication, construction, and implementation of tooling and production aids. Communicates with vendors, and in-house personnel to receive quotations, answer questions, and resolve problems.
  • Utilize Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing tools, as applicable, to reduce process variation, eliminate non-value added activities and defects and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, movement within manufacturing and office environment, write by hand and keyboard.

Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication by means of telephone, writing, reading, and keyboard. Visual acuity required for close detail work and computer use.

JOB CONDITIONS

Light manufacturing and testing environment, general office environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSME preferred or BSMET with machining / automation emphasis.
  • One to three years experience in manufacturing/production environment preferred.
  • Mastery of machine shop math, well versed in machine design calculations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Must have Authorization to work in the United States, and be able to have lawful access to controlled technology as required for this position.
