About the CWGC

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission honours and cares for the men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they will never be forgotten. Funded by six Member Governments, our work began with building, and now maintaining, cemeteries at 23,000 locations all over the world.

Today, over a century after we first began, our work continues through our staff, supporters and volunteers who preserve our unique cultural, horticultural and architectural heritage and ensure that the stories of those who died are told.

About this Role and You

As a Commemorations Officer you will work closely with colleagues across the world as well as with Commonwealth government authorities, managing casework relating to the recovery, identification and commemoration of casualties from the First and Second World Wars. Your work will influence the way men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice are commemorated forever.

You will be able to demonstrate:

Experience of sourcing, interpreting and evaluating military and genealogical sources such as the CWGC archives, published material and military records in a professional setting, ideally within a research role. You will have sound 20th Century historical knowledge and be familiar with military terminology such as ranks, organisations, hierarchy etc.

With your strong organisational and analytical skills, you will be able to create accurate, credible, and evidence-based reports, applying both knowledge and judgement to make solid recommendations. You will be a strong communicator able to convey the work of the Commemorations team effectively to a wide range of stakeholders. Advanced in the use of MS Office, particularly Excel and Teams, you will be confident using digital applications relevant to the role, such as archival or collections databases.

Previous experience of working with or for a Commonwealth military organisation or in the heritage/cultural sector and/or familiarity with CWGC Commemoration policies would be an advantage.
