ASSISTANT LABORATORY ANIMAL TECHNICIAN
General Summary
This position is responsible for providing general research support in the animal laboratories. The Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician must have the desire and ability to learn and apply basic knowledge for understanding scientific research and methods, to become proficient in many laboratory techniques, and have a proven ability to work well within a team. The Group Leader, In Vivo will provide day-to-day task direction and ensure quality of work completed. This position reports directly to the Manager, In Vivo Laboratory Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Observes and executes activities consistent with study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or Laboratory Methods, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations, and safety and health practices.
- Demonstrates knowledge of basic study design and execution.
- Executes key activities on a study following appropriate procedures.
- Administers test and control materials by various routes including gavage, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous.
- Collects samples and specimens.
- Provides animal care and husbandry, including changing racks, and providing feed and water.
- Cleans cages, equipment, and work area. Decontaminates animal rooms, this includes operating sanitizing and sterilizing equipment.
- Gathers experimental data, including temperatures, weights, clinical observations, and husbandry data, as required.
- Handles and restrains animals of various species (e.g. rodents, ferrets, dogs, non-human primates, rabbits, etc.) under animal biosafety levels 1, 2, and/or 3 containment procedures.
- Communicate with and update manager, group leads, and co-workers as needed.
- Completes other duties as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent and 0-3 years of related experience.
- Ability to observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices requirements, and study protocols.
- Must be able to work in an A/BSL-3 laboratory.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrate ability to utilize relevant MS Office Suite Products.
- Ability to work overtime as needed, and rotating weekends and holidays.
- In compliance with Federal mandates, effective December 8, 2021, Southern Research will require that all newly hired employees show proof of full COVID vaccination or authorized exemption prior to their start date.
Work Environment & Conditions
This position works in a laboratory environment and requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to):
- Eye protection (Safety glasses and/or full face shield)
- Respirator (varies based on tasks and barrier requirements)
- Tyvek/scrub suits
- Nitrile (or equivalent) gloves (varies based on tasks)
- Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
Physical Demands
This position requires significant physical abilities including (but not limited to):
- Standing, walking or climbing for extended periods of time
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area
- Lifting, pulling, or pushing heavy objects (sometimes in excess of 50 lbs.)
- Perform repetitive activities
- Clear vision with corrective lenses at 20 feet or more and ability to determine colors (no color blindness)
- Fine motor skills and manual dexterity
- Wearing a respirator for extended periods of time (BSL3 environment)
- Ability to perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time
ALAT, LAT, or LATG (preferred, not required).
