ABOUT WATER ENTERPRISE
The Water Enterprise manages our complex regional water supply system featuring reservoirs, tunnels, pipelines, and treatment plants. POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Surveyor, under general direction, manages a section or division by planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of a group of technical and professional personnel engaged in land survey activities. The ideal candidate will be capable of overseeing all manner of boundary and topographic surveying. A critical part of the position involves monitoring four earth dams and one concrete dam located throughout the watershed. The candidate will have the necessary organizational skills to preparea budget and follow SFPUC purchasing procedures. The administrative skills involved in personnel management are of equal importance to the position as the technical surveying skills.

The essential functions of the Chief Surveyorinclude, but are not limited to, the following:

* Manages a section or division by planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of subordinates.
* Reviews surveying or map requirements and resolves problems as needed.
* Examines areas to be surveyed and assigns the appropriate survey party.
* Checks field survey or map work in progress and directs subordinates.
* Performs surveying or map processing operations to assist engineering projects and staff.
* Manages the budget for survey parties and map processing to ensure adequate staffing, supplies, and equipment.
* Collects and reviews survey notes or map applications for completeness and accuracy.
* Supervises the maintenance of official records, maps, and survey reports and the preparation of related reports.
* Coordinates with other city agencies on requests for service, time schedules, and cost estimates.
* Assists the Division Manager in making revisions of programs, objectives, and goals.
* Develops, interprets, and coordinates surveying and map processing policy and methods for the Division.
* Writes and checks boundary legal descriptions and performs other professional duties which require a licensed land surveyor.
* Manages horizontal and vertical control systems which may include use of Global Positioning System (GPS) monumentation/documentation program.
* Implements and provides input to the Geographic Information System (GIS) base map system.
* Updates codes and regulations and reviews proposed bills and budget, cost, and fee assessments.
* Makes regular contactwith the other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and outside organizations relative to mapping and survey practices and procedures.
* Drives a vehicle to work sites and meetings when necessary.
* Performs related duties as required for Class 5216 Chief Surveyor.
