Job description

The Business Development group will work with colleagues across the SPHBio and SPH organizations to identify new business development opportunities for out-licensing (SPH products globally), in-licensing (Chinese rights to late-stage opportunities) and to form partnerships with SPHBio (in San Diego). The Business Development group will be responsible for thoroughly evaluating in-licensing candidates, performing competitive market intelligence and rapidly executing licensing transactions. The group will also be responsible for initiating discussions for product out-licensing. You will need to be a self-starter, have a collaborative mindset, and have the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all aspects of business development activities, in- and out-licensing, including deal structuring, leading or supporting agreement negotiations, and the closing of transactions.
  • Collaborate with R&D colleagues to develop non-confidential and confidential program presentation materials, accurate and with a strategic focus to maximize the value of the project.
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional due diligence teams, collaborating across research and development, regulatory, marketing, finance, legal, and intellectual property.
  • Perform commercial opportunity assessments, conducting and incorporating market sizing, competitive landscape analysis, primary and secondary market research, and forecasting.
  • Monitor competitive intelligence by keeping up to date on market trends, competitors, and opportunities.

Required Background:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, in a science- or health-related field
  • Advanced degree (JD, MBA, PhD, PharmD) strongly preferred
  • 8+ years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience, preferably with strong R&D experience
  • 5+ years of experience in business development and licensing, with a diverse history of successful transactions
  • A proven track record of structuring, negotiating, and closing complex collaborations, including international corporations
  • Knowledge the drug development process, from early discovery research through development and commercialization stages
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently with a high degree of independence
  • Available to travel domestically and internationally
