Job description

Position Title: Sport Communications and Information Intern
Department: Sport and Competition
Duration: Winter Semester 2022, Spring Semester 2022
Status: Intern, Remote
Supervisor: Marie Merritt, Director, Sport Operations & Administration

Overview:
Special Olympics Sport and Competition department is responsible for supporting the global implementation of Special Olympics sport, competition and events from local to international levels. Work includes sport development with focuses on Coach Education, Sport Partnerships, Unified Sports, and Sport Rules. Sport and Competition collaborates with the Communications and Marketing department to gather, develop and promote Sport Information across the organization, and with external partners. The position will coordinate, write and distribute information and resources for Special Olympics Sports
and Sport subcommittees. This internship will sit within the Sport and Competition Department but will include extensive interaction and collaboration with the SOI Communications and Marketing team.

Responsibilities:
• Identify story opportunities and create content for SOI website and social media accounts for our Sport Development and Coach Education programming
• Design, write, and support in production of printed Sport materials including infographics and programmatic guides
• Writes and edits promotional materials including internal and external newsletters, infographics, programmatic guides, brochures and proposals
• Develops and maintains close contact with Regional Communications & Sports staff to set up any individual interviews, respond to sport queries and share stories.
• Implement SOI website updates following story releases
• Review Sport and Competition department external documents to ensure grammatical accuracy and alignment with SOI brand guidelines
• Gather and present industry-relevant articles and media stories to Sport and Competition department monthly

Requirements for the Role:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Efficient in copy editing
• Ability to work well under timelines and consistently meet deadlines
• Competent with Microsoft Office Suite and Zoom
• Ability to balance an independent work style with collaborative teamwork
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Internship Details:
• The start and end date for the internship are flexible. Position can be part-time or full-time, and is an unpaid internship with hours agreed upon by intern and SOI. Eligible applicants must be a current student in sport management, communications, or public relations and must be eligible for University credit. Research experience and experience working with people with intellectual disabilities is preferred.
