Job description
Supervises personnel and ensures agency compliance in the laboratory for second and third shift.
Responsibilities:
* Supervises personnel and ensures agency compliance in the laboratory.
* Assists the Laboratory Director in the management and supervision of the laboratory through planning, directing, coordinating, implementing, controlling, evaluating and improving the quality of patient care delivered.
* Supervises one or more designated sections and ensures that goals and standards are in compliance with hospital standards and those of the applicable accrediting organizations.
* Manages the equipment and resources in the department.
* Promotes teamwork with all customers.
* Identifies each patient specimen and testing orders and ensures results are accurate and reported in a timely manner.
* Ensures specimen integrity and identification and resolves specimens not meeting testing criteria.
* Reports pertinent information to the physician, patient care area or Laboratory Manager (e.g., panic values, instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent or supply depletion.)
* Reviews all sectional policies and procedures annually and revises as needed. Develops, implements and monitors new policies and procedures.
* Ensures staff reviews the policies on an annual basis.
* Screens, interviews and assists in the selection of individuals for open positions within the section.
* Participates in interdisciplinary teams, committees, or activities to improve organizational performance and interdepartmental communication.
* Helps maintain section employee files (new employee orientation checklists, equipment training checklists and other competencies) and submits them to the Laboratory Director.
* Completes and conducts performance evaluations for all subordinate staff after 3 months of employment and annually.
* Submits completed evaluations to the Laboratory Director.
* Ensures instrument operations and results are reliable and consistently performed and documented.
* Reviews and investigates outliers.
* Answers the telephone, greets customers and provides consult and technical support to the technologists, physicians, phlebotomists and nursing staff.
* Relays and suggests opportunities for improvement to the Laboratory Director and contributes to organizational and sectional performance improvement.
* Reviews, investigates and documents quality control patterns and submits monthly assessment reports to the Laboratory Director or the Laboratory
* Manager.
* Reviews and signs the monthly quality control in the chemistry department.
* Organizes the functions of the section supervised through the appropriate assignment of responsibilities, delegation and overall direction of work-flow processes.
* Communicates with the Laboratory Director, Managers, Pathologists, employees and other departments to coordinate efforts, meet special needs and address problems or concerns.
* Monitors resource utilization including staffing, supplies and expenses.
* Provides guidance and training to employees in the section as necessary.
* Reviews daily and monthly maintenance in the chemistry department.
* Other duties as assigned.
Education:
* Minimum Education: B.S. Degree in one of the Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences or B.S. of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent.
Certifications:
* State of Florida supervisor's license in all disciplines. Hematology,
Chemistry, Immunohematology, Immunology, Microbiology.
* American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification preferred.

Work Experience:
* Three years management experience as a full time section supervisor preferred.
Physical Requirements:
* This position is primarily mobile in nature.
* The average amount of lifting is 10 pounds with occasional carrying of objects up to 20 pounds.
* Sitting for short periods of time, the ability to file, move records, laboratory supplies, and equipment also requires bending and stooping.
* Communication by means of the spoken, written and typed word is required.
* Work requires finger dexterity and eye hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.
* Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.
* Special Demands: Use of personal protective equipment is required as there is a potential for exposure to biohazardous or infectious agents when drawing and processing specimens.
Personal Protective Equipment:
* Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
