Summary of Job Duties:
The individual holding this position will be responsible for timely communication of research, extension, and educational impacts from the Department of Poultry Science, the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science, and the Center for Food Animal Well-Being. Communication should be in the form of news releases, web content, research, extension, and teaching reports, and social media content.

This position will:

• Promote the people and programs of the Department of Poultry Science, the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science, and the Center for Food Animal Well-Being to all relevant stakeholders using internal and external communication that includes news releases, email, newsletters, reports, website content, and social media.

• Work with researchers to understand and translate complex scientific concepts for the average reader.

• Work directly with Center Directors and Department Head to develop an annual report on research impacts and accomplishments. This report should highlight faculty research programs, research outputs and impact, funding, technology transfer, and research sponsors working with the department and both centers. Reports should be shared with all relevant clientele and stakeholders on an annual basis.

• Coordinate with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station communications team on multimedia projects (videos, photos, etc.) and editorial content development.

• Utilize available expertise in graphic design to develop and manage a department and center branding strategy that supports the mission and intent of the department, center, UADA (encompassing the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service), and Bumpers AFLS.

• Oversee marketing and social media communication for all POSC/CEPS events and programs, including but not limited to photography, marketing pieces, and working directly with faculty, staff, and students on news releases, announcements, and similar forms of external communication.

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with reporters, editors, news directors, etc. of poultry-specific and general agricultural industry publications and news outlets. Pitch stories directly to media outlets, and in coordination with the larger Division of Agriculture communications team.
Qualifications:

  • B.S. or B.A. in Ag communication, communication, or journalism is required. Prior experience with web management, graphic design, or social media platform management is preferred.
  • Note: Of all communication skills, the ability to write impactfully is key to success in this position. Writing samples, a portfolio, and participation in a writing exercise will be important to the application and interview process.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years of experience writing and editing, preferably with a focus on science writing
  • Photography skills would be a plus


Salary Information:

$40,000-$44,000 commensurate with education and experience
