Job Description
Nevada State College (NSC) invites application for the position of STEM Research Laboratory Technician. The STEM Research Laboratory Technician will provide laboratory support for the PaLS STEM researchers. The position reports to the Undergraduate Research Program Director and will work in the Liberal Arts and Sciences under the supervision of the Physical and Life Sciences faculty and research lab director. The STEM research laboratory technician will conduct of moderate to advanced research in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, or ecology. This position, requires prior research experience and technical skills to be able to perform complex lab experiments independently. Additionally, the lab technician will take on a leadership role in the laboratory, training other students on the use of equipment and common laboratory practices. Finally, the lab technician is also required to have a rigorous safety training to be able to work with hazardous materials, monitor laboratory work, including the activities of staff and student researchers to ensure compliance with lab safety and maintain a clean working area.

Core Responsibilities:
Assist with planning and performing research projects in various research contexts (i.e., chemistry, microbiology, genetics, ecology) as directed by the undergraduate research program director and faculty researchers including:
- Assist with and conduct research including laboratory and field experiments utilizing standard techniques and equipment such as, but not limited to: Crystallization, Autoclave operation, DNA Extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, NMR spectroscopy.
- Assist with media preparation, data collection including field data collection
- Perform routine logging and testing of samples.
- Process, organize and summarize data, reporting experimental results using a variety spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms.
- Prepare chemical reagents and biological media, as needed.
- Assist with ensuring laboratory safety, monitor proper function of lab equipment/instruments, supply and chemical inventory.
- Continue laboratory safety training to ensure the most current practices.
- Promote student and faculty safe lab practices.
- Maintain refrigerators/freezers daily temperature logs.
- Unbox and log lab supply shipments and take cardboard boxes to recycling.
- Maintain appropriate labeling and disposals of biological and chemical hazards.
- Maintain glassware by cleaning, washing, sterilizing, and distributing
- Keep the lab work space neat and clean.
- Organizing lab shelves, drawers and maintain the inventory of supplies and chemicals.
- Maintain inventory system of supplies by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Keep equipment clean and operating according to the manufacturer equipment maintenance schedule.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at NSC, preferably in a related discipline.
- Skills and Experience: Prior research experience and/or relevant course work (e.g., chemistry, genetics, biochemistry, and related laboratory courses) completed
- Demonstrated abilities in laboratory techniques required.
- Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas)

Work Hours:
Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.
Hourly Rate:
$12.00 per hour
