Job description

Nuclera is a rapidly scaling biotechnology company developing the world's first Desktop Bioprinter. Our mission is clear: to provide high quality genes and proteins at the desktop to bring rapid prototyping to the life sciences.

We are seeking a creative and talented polymer scientist to join our Materials Science team to lead the development of innovative polymer thin film coatings for application in digital microfluidic devices. The candidate will take ownership of the research efforts to understand and improve polymer thin films, with an emphasis on the interactions between coatings and electrolyte solutions, bioreagents, and solid-state electrodes. The candidate is expected to be familiar with functional properties of polymer thin films, including protective, antifouling, conductive, hydrophobic and tribological. This position will work as part of the R&D team while also interacting with the manufacturing team to assist in advancing current production capability.

Requirements

If successful you will:

  • Conduct laboratory experiments in the fields of polymer science, thin film coatings, surface science, and electrochemistry
  • Design and optimize polymer formulations and nanolaminates for digital microfluidic applications
  • Characterize polymer coatings properties such as hydrophobicity, water permeability, porosity, and dielectric strength
  • Develop and implement tools, metrologies, and test methods for the deposition and characterization of thin film polymer coatings
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design, develop, and optimize polymer/solid state coatings from concept to scale-up
  • Effectively apply the latest polymer thin film techniques and materials for the next generation product with high performance and low cost
  • Evaluate emerging digital microfluidic materials and technologies, industry trends and coating techniques
  • Document and effectively communicate the results in comprehensive technical reports

Essential for the role:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Science.
  • Excellent communication skills, work ethic, organization, and willingness to be a team player

Advantageous for the role:

  • PhD Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a Master's Degree + 4 years of experience
  • A strong track record of achievements in the areas of polymer thin film development and characterization
  • Experience with surface characterization, metrology equipment, polymer coating techniques
  • Experience with synthetic chemistry and electrowetting

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, Nuclera offers:

  • Incentive stock options
  • A comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision and life insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • 25-day annual holiday allowance
