Rate of Pay: 17.00/hr
Work Schedule: MON - FRI
(Flexible between 7:30AM - 6:00PM)
Kelly has an exciting opportunity for an entry level Chemist role in Portland, OR . The Extraction Chemist performs an essential role to provide accurate and timely analytical results to clients through extraction analysis. They also contribute to innovations, efficiency, quality, and array of laboratory services offered to clients to achieve the Company's mission and objectives.
Responsibilities:
- Performs extraction analysis as per documented method and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Performs routine extraction, chemical isolation and sample clean-up using various techniques, including: Blending, Shaking, Soxhlet extraction, Digestion, SPE, Distillation/Condensation,
- Liquid-liquid partitioning, and chemical derivatization.
- Operates laboratory apparatus and equipment including blenders, nitrogen and roto-evaporators, centrifuges, closed vessel microwave systems, balances, ovens, furnace, and autoclave.
- Informs supervisor of any deviations or changes to established procedures. Use appropriate documentation of changes.
- Maintains, prepares, and documents reagents and/or analytical working standards according to
- current SOPs. Uses designated forms and software.
- Completes quality control (QC) checks and entries in forms as required by protocols and/or SOPs.
- Maintains and calibrates general laboratory instruments and equipment including pH meter, centrifuges, balances, vacuum pumps, water baths, freezers, or others.
- Troubleshoots equipment problems and performs minor repairs, notifying supervisor of any equipment issue that requires major repair.
- Maintains a clean and uncluttered working environment for yourself and others.
- Remains informed of hazards associated with chemicals, equipment, and their use in a laboratory setting. Works in a safe manner, using appropriate safeguards and personal protective equipment, to prevent injury to yourself or co-workers. Reports all accidents or unsafe working to the safety committee or management.
- Works with Quality Assurance group in the development/revision and implementation of SOPs as required.
- Assists in the development and on-going execution of equipment maintenance, calibration, and safety programs.
- Cross-trains with other co-workers to be able to assist when necessary to meet analysis and project deadlines. Participates in internal/external trainings as needed.
- Recommends improvements to existing test procedures and environment; how equipment can be utilized to improve efficiency. Assists in the development of new methods as needed.
- Contributes to the continuous improvement of laboratory operations through participation in department meetings, input to management, and other available means.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Chemistry from four-year college or university
- One-to-six-month related experience or training in laboratory or in other professional settings
- Experience working in international businesses and a good cultural awareness a plus
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, and quadratic equations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Experienced user of MS Office and Adobe Acrobat
