Job description
Kelly is actively recruiting for a Direct Hire - Laboratory Director in the Greater Portland area, OR.
Mission:
The Laboratory Director manages the laboratory testing business and provides strategic and business leadership to achieve the Company's mission and objectives.
Work Activities:
- Responsible for assessing organizational and business performance and leading change for the better. Collaborates with other departments such as HR, accounting, and IT to establish an efficient and effective business.
- 2. Responsible for building, communicating, and overseeing the implementation of overall laboratory business strategies, based on the information gained for example by analyzing new testing trends, competitor information and sales information.
- 3. Manages the laboratory testing fees and the laboratory operation cost, working with Accounting.
- 4. Assesses, presents, and obtains necessary resources for effective laboratory operation. This includes lab finance, budgeting, capital investments, capacity, and human resources. Assists the President in making financial decisions.
- 5. Responsible for Company marketing, including managing the website, networking with relevant industry organizations to get new business ideas and opportunities, attending and addressing in conference, industry associations, seminars, writing articles, etc. to make sure of the Company's presence in the industry and communities.
- 6. Responsible for the operation, implementation, and the ultimate direction of LIMS development and should be familiar with its major components, tools, various functions, capabilities, and limitations.
- 7. Ensures the health and safety of working conditions.
- 8. Monitors the laboratory building and outside facility for maintenance to protect the laboratory operation, keep a good company image and security. Coordinates with facility personnel if necessary.
- 9. Responsible for technical development, people development and performance management of direct reports.
- 10.Communicates business and quality concerns, needs, updates and strategies with the leadership team proactively and in a timely manner.
- 11.Responsible for writing testing service proposals for all laboratory areas. This work should be done by working with the Laboratory Manager making sure that the proposals are fiscally responsible with an understanding of operating expenses and marketing strategies.
- 12.The Laboratory Director is considered as the Analytical Test Facility Manager for GLP studies contracted to the laboratory, and as such is responsible for the requirements outlined in EPA Good Laboratory Practice Standards (40 C.F.R. Part 160) (GLPS) sections §160.31 (a) through (g) and §160.35 (d).
- 13. Other misc. responsibilities may be added from time to time.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manages the Lab Manager, QA department and LIMS department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Required:
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
· Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Science or other lab testing related areas from four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience
· Excellent business management acumen
· Has demonstrated experience of successful organizational change management of relevant complexity
· Has demonstrated experience of successful business development
· Extensive knowledge in laboratory business and market
· Extensive knowledge in business finance and marketing
· Successful experience of collaborating with different business departments
· Successful and extensive experience of leading, motivating, and supervising teams of relevant significance
· Familiar with LIMS or related software
· Experience working in international businesses and has good cultural awareness
· Is connected well with relevant external organizations and has good knowledge of industry best practices
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write SOPs, reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from subordinates, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, and quadratic equations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Ability to perform standard quality assurance I quality control evaluation procedures, including audits. Technical writing for preparing manuals and documentation
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Preferred:
• Master's or Doctorate degree in relevant areas
• Extensive knowledge of LIMS and industry best practices
• Extensive food chemistry/food safety laboratory experience including but not limited to inorganic and organic departments
• Extensive biological food safety laboratory experience including but not limited to microbiological and GMO departments
• QA or GLP knowledge and experience
