We invite applications for a staff scientist position in Quantum Computational Science within the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division. This position is part of ORNL's Quantum Computational Science group whichdevelops the fundamental quantum computer science, algorithms, and software interfaces needed to leverage quantum accelerators to advance scientific discovery.
In this position you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and testing novel quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms aimed at solving scientific computing challenges within the mission of the DOE Office of Science. You will be collaborating with the members of ORNL's Quantum Computational Science group in algorithm research for solving quantum machine learning, optimization, and many-body physics problems. You are expected to leverage ORNL's unique multidisciplinary collaborative environment where domain scientists from condensed matter, nuclear, and high energy physics work together with applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and quantum information researchers with the goal of advancing the cutting-edge research in scientific computing.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with highly diverse and multidisciplinary teams to develop novel quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms and verify, validate, and benchmark developed algorithms on available hardware .
- Communicate findings and results to international audiences through written publications and oral presentations.
- Contribute to the development of open source software.
- Author peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports and proposals for internal and external release as well as represent the organization via technical presentations in workshops and conferences.
- Develop new research directions as a basis of continued funding and the overall health of the group.
- Mentor early career research staff, postdocs and students.
Basic Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline with specialization in quantum algorithm research
- Experience with modern software development methodologies
- An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
Preferred Qualifications:
- 8 or more years of experience in quantum computing including algorithm research and development, implementation, and benchmarking.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to a scientific audience
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and multi-disciplinary teams of researchers
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
