REPORTS TO: Finance Controller

DEPARTMENT: Finance

STATUS: Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW

TwinStrand Biosciences is a Seattle-based genomics company focused on developing cutting-edge approaches for early detection of cancer, treatment optimization, and risk prediction using our ultra-accurate TwinStrand Duplex Sequencing™ technology. Our technology enables researchers and clinicians to detect genetic "needles in a haystack." By identifying ultra-low frequency DNA mutations with a resolution 10,000-fold greater than conventional tools on the market, TwinStrand enables detection, quantification, and characterization of variants that were previously undetectable. We have recently closed a $50 million Series B financing and will continue our accelerated growth to make a difference in life sciences and medicine.

We are seeking a highly motivated, independent contributor to join our growing organization to provide on-site support as a Financial Analyst and Operations Manager. Your role will be to lead and support a range of accounting, finance, research activities, as well as presenting data/statistics and advising various business units.

At TwinStrand we value collaboration, thought partnership and scientific rigor. As a member of our Finance team, you will have direct interaction with all other departments and will have an opportunity to participate in shaping our processes, culture, and fiscally sound decision-making and operational practices.

Success in this role will require exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, discretion, diplomacy and a commitment to excellence to handle the day-to-day financial duties while ensuring impeccable communication and timely execution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide directions and assistance to employees performing accounting, billing, payables, payroll, general ledger, budgeting and financial reporting duties.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation, analysis and presentation of all financial reports, statements and tax returns and filings on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
  • Analyze financial details of past and present and build financial models for expected operations to identify development opportunities.
  • Advise management on short-term and long-term financial objectives, policies and actions.
  • Responsible for preparing the organization's rolling forecast, long range financial plans, cost accounting, strategic analysis, market analysis, statistical reporting, and other analyses as directed.
  • Maintain financial security and integrity by following internal accounting controls.
  • Comfortable working with large volumes of complex data and presenting findings to senior leadership in a concise and actionable manner.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills to managers and peer groups.
  • Have advanced knowledge of Excel such as macros, index, conditional list, arrays, pivots, charts, and lookups.
  • Compile budgetary and fiscal data received from assigned departments to prepare revenue.
  • Balance statements and historical comparisons of departmental expenditures with requested appropriations.

EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITIES

  • Strong financial modeling experience - you are expected to be comfortable constructing a full three-statement financial model from scratch. You should have experience in developing and thinking through your own assumptions and creating a product that is easily navigable and dynamic enough to sensitize quickly. You should possess advanced Excel skill sets.
  • Detail-oriented - As we grow, financial consistency across documents is more important than ever. You are expected to have a propensity for investigating numbers, digging into the details when answers at the surface appear inadequate, and documenting your analysis.
  • Analytical - You should be a problem solver by nature and enjoy the challenge of finding answers to new and complex questions.
  • Collaborative and Communicative - You should love being part of a diverse team, building consensus, and establishing credibility. You are an effective communicator: curious, thoughtful, clear, and concise.
  • Take Initiative - Success in this role is driven by the your ability to recognize and define tasks and processes that may not currently exist and execute upon them.
  • Unassailable integrity, outstanding organizational skills and strong work ethic.
  • Prior biotech experience, particularly at a startup, highly desirable.

PHYSICAL AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • No travel is anticipated for this position.

OUTSTANDING CANDIDATES WILL

  • Value and demonstrate intellectual curiosity and an ability to apply critical thinking and initiative to drive for tangible positive business and financial outcomes.
  • Have a proven ability to be flexible, creative, diplomatic and work in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with multiple teams and ambitious timelines.
  • Work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
  • Demonstrate good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Genuinely celebrate the achievements of customers and colleagues and take pride in a culture of setting others up for success.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A mission to be proud of. You will help to provide access to a technology with unprecedented sensitivity that makes it possible to solve previously unsolvable scientific problems in basic research and translational medicine, with direct and immediate benefits to human health.
  • Beautiful new waterfront facility overlooking Puget Sound, centrally located in downtown Seattle.
  • Competitive compensation plan.
  • Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental and vision benefits for employees and dependents, sponsored life, short and long-term disability insurance, and 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Subsidized transportation program: parking, bus, ferry, rideshare and more.
  • Onsite gym, showers, bike storage.
  • Social events, weekly happy hours, well-stocked kitchen.
  • Recognition that outside life exists and is important, that flexibility is needed for family and that work can sometimes be effectively carried out remotely.
  • Casual, but high-performing work environment.

This overview and the Staff Accountant Overview read exactly the same. Can info be added RE: the more senior role here to differentiate the level of responsibility that is expected over a staff accountant?

This bullet has a bit much going on. Can be broken up or reduced in scope (mention of Excel Skills and general content already mentioned earlier in JD.) This also made me realize some inconsistencies in phrasing. I'd like the JD to reflect a voice that sounds like a personal letter to the candidate, so using "you" instead of "they" or "candidate(s)"
