Job Title: Senior Staff Scientist

Location: Redwood City, CA

Purpose statement:

The Senior Staff Scientist conducts bench scientific experimentation that advances the basic science of nucleic acids and nucleic acid biochemistry and leads with development and characterization of major genomics products in NGS, qPCR and CRISPR etc. This position leads customer support activity and scientific collaboration with external key opinion leaders as well.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises and directs staff which would include employee hiring, training, evaluations and discipline.
  • Applies extensive scientific knowledge across multiple disciplines with broad laboratory skills to execute complex bench experiments using variety of molecular biology, cell biology, biochemical and general laboratory techniques as directed.
  • Manages complex projects; develops and implements new strategies or novel solutions.
  • Analyzes raw data, organizes and reports results; plans next steps and directs/manages implementation.
  • Develops creative solutions for complex problems, drawing on extensive knowledge of science and bench experience.
  • Utilizes mathematical, graphical, imaging, nucleic acid analysis, and other software aids as needed.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental work.
  • Presents experimental results, data analysis or prior art evaluations at group and higher level corporate meetings as directed.
  • Prepares assessments of new technologies for review by higher management, assists with guiding the direction of research activities and new product development.
  • Directs preparation of technical reports or user manuals for internal/external use.
  • Files invention disclosures and writes patent applications and manuscripts for publication.
  • Provides, on routine basis, scientific support for other IDT departments; assists customer service/technical support with direct customer interaction and helps manage or lead external collaborative research projects.
  • Assists with general scientific and specific new product training for other IDT groups.
  • Introduces new techniques into the research group which have not previously been used at IDT.
  • Represents IDT at scientific conference and trade shows, prepares and presents scientific posters and/or podium presentations.
  • Prepares for interaction with top level executive management including presenting data or analyses of scientific materials and/or patents.
  • Assists IDT sales reps with field visits to key customers as needed.
  • Uses radioactive materials and autoradiography, on occasion, during the course of experimental work.
  • Demonstrates and upholds behavior consistent with the Integrated DNA Technologies Core Values and delivers the Integrated DNA Technologies experience to customers and other business associates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with fifteen or more years relevant lab experience required
  • Master's degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with twelve or more years relevant lab experience preferred
  • PhD degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with ten or more years relevant lab experience preferred
Professional Experience:
  • Proficiency in a variety of PC software programs with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
  • Familiarity with DNA analysis/bioinformatics applications required.
  • Previous experience with public speaking required.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals preferred.
  • Previous experience with writing and prosecuting patent applications preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of IDT products and product lines preferred.

  • Ability to multitask and maintain several projects at one time.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with peers and all levels of management.
  • Expert in a field or specific area of science/biotechnology relevant to IDT research and product development. Recognized for expertise within said field throughout the company as the "go to" person.
  • Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are make-or-break aspects of the job.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for the direction, control or planning of an activity.
  • Adaptability to situations requiring the precise attainment of set limits, tolerances or standards.

  • Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range; ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when auscultating and percussing.
  • Bending: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist and/or bending leg; bending legs at knee to come to rest or kneel.
  • Pushing/Pulling: using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward/using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Climbing: stairs, stools, ramps, ladders.
Visual Acuity:
  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.
  • Ability to accurately read measurements on equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
